PCI-e vs PCi system bus

POSTER: computer news   ||   PCI-E VS PCI SYSTEM BUS

DATE:2007-02-27

In the opinion of specialists from the analytical company inStat, the system bus PCI express (PCI- E) became in practice universal solution, used in PC from all categories and x86- compatible servers. This conclusion was presented in the recently prepared by them report.

Introduction of PCI- E occurred by fast rates. They rapidly show up on the market for desktop pc motherboard and servers. Let us recall that PCI- E strongly differ from its predecessor : PCI system bus . In particular, this difference is in the fact that this PCI- E is sequential, but not parallel interface, due to it developers was able to decrease the number of contacts and to increase the capacity. Another special feature Of PCI-Express lies in the fact that transmission channel can be formed by several lines, and this furthermore add possibility to substantially increase the capacity .

In the beginning of year , group PCI-SIG, critical for the standardization of PCI- E, accepted the new specifications version , which received the designation PCI express base 2.0. The higher-speed diagram of signals transfer will alow to increase the maximum speed of data from 2,5 to 5 GT/s (GigaTransfers per second ). In this case summary capacity of 16- linear connection (x16) composes approximately 16 Gb/s. So, the first chipsets with support to PCI express base 2.0 can become AMD RV630, whose official announcement is expected during May. According to the estimation of analysts to 2010, PCI- E will be used in 440,2 mln. devices. Statistics also calculated, that in 2006 PCI- E was used in 17 mln.  and to 2010 this quantity will grow to 37,2 mln. units. Concerning the devices of consumer electronics, here PCI- E is the rare guest, however, as PCI. The report compilers assume that this situation will be preserved in the near future.
