More precisely saying, the discussion deals with the module camera with the automatic focusing AFCM MI285, developed by the specialists of company varioptic. The basis of module became the automatically focusing objective varioptic arctic 416. The resulting article has very small size (diameter - 8,5 mm) with the resolution of 2 Mp, which corresponds to the well contemporary tendencies of – the miniature modules cameras they are claimed in the compact cell phones.
The work of uncommon objective is based on the effect of electro-moistening (electrowetting phenomenon), which is illustrated in the diagram (and already it was in detail described in one of our news). The drop of water is placed to the base layer from the metal, covered with the thin insulating layer. If we to the base layer exert voltage, it is possible to change the angle of contact with liquid. In the objective is used two immiscible liquids: one as insulator, another – in the role of conductor. Changing voltage, it is possible to change the surface curvature division, which, in turn, leads to a change in the focal length objective. By the way, Canadian scientists proposed not less interesting approach to the creation of objectives in their time.
In liquid objectives varioptic there are no moving parts, which ensures with them definite advantages over traditional objectives with the automatic focusing in the terms of sizes, reliability, speed, price and energy consumption. Speaking about the price, it is worthwhile to note that the price of module is 16 dollars (in the party of 50000 pieces). Apparently, its contribution to reduction in the price introduced and the fact that order for the production of novelty was placed in China.
Size of the objective arctic 416 (in the photograph) - 7,75 x 1,6 mm, optical size - 1/4 inches, the range the focal lengths – from 6 cm ad infinitum. Time of focusing – 300 ms. The current consumed by objective does not exceed 200 A.
